What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than ploughing your own furrow in the heart of the Orkney mainland, preparing the ancient soil for a new lease of life. I am very fortunate to know a local farmer who is happy enough to indulge my passion for "hobby farming" hence the irregular visits to his farm to repair dry stane walls and plough squiggly lines up and down his fields.

I should add that I was ploughing in a field a stones throw from the Knowes of Trotty, one of Orkney's earliest groups of Bronze Age barrows. Four beautiful gold 'sun' discs were found in the largest barrow at the Knowes of Trotty during the initial excavation so little wonder I was keeping a keen eye on the upturned black soil every time the plough struck stone lest I have unearthed Orkney's latest archaeological wonder...!

Indeed, the Orkney Islands have an incredible abundance of ancient sites and exciting new discoveries are frequently made. Ready to embark on your own voyage of discovery to the Orkney Islands? Contact Graham's Orkney Tours to learn more
